P&P Blogger Profile: Paul Politis

Why do you blog?

Since going digital in 2005 I take a lot more photos, and blogging encourages me to process the ones that I kind of like, and not just the ones I really like. I’ve made some discoveries because of this: discoveries in terms of techniques in Photoshop, as well as discoveries of things I’d like to photograph more.

If you only had time to read three blogs a day, which ones would they be?
I don’t really read any blogs, though there are a few photoblogs I do check periodically.

How long have you been using Photoshop/been a photographer?
I’ve been photographing for about 20 years, and have been using Photoshop for about 4 years. Before that, I was still trying to get the results I wanted the traditional way – with a small darkroom in my basement.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with?
I now shoot pretty much exclusively with a Canon EOS 20D

Mac or PC?
PC

What is your favorite piece of photo or computer equipment (other than your camera)?
My Epson 2200 printer.

What piece of equipment would you most like to get but don’t have?
I’d love to have a 16 megapixel camera, but I also want to keep my house.

What advice do you have for a novice creative professional/photographer?
Not sure who would want advice from me, but the most important thing is to shoot as often as possible, I think.

What inspires you to create?
I get inspired by anything, often by very minor details or textures. Once something catches my eye, I try to find a way to photograph it that will be interesting. I’m often unsuccessful, but that is the sequence I follow: something attracts my eye for whatever reason, and I try to incorporate it into a composition that is pleasing.

What would be your most important piece of advice about life?
I am always hoping someone will clue me in. If they do, I’ll let you know what they said.

Where would you most like to live (other than where you live now)?
Probably Europe, though I would need a travel allowance and a year off to find the exact right spot for me.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Photography.

What talent would you most like to have?

If I could be a great novelist, I wouldn’t have to walk around the city on cold days with a camera…

From Inside the Actors Studio:
What is your favorite word? Euphoria.
What is your least favorite word? Workday.
What turns you on? Kindness.
What turns you off? Blind obedience.
What sound or noise do you love? The sound of light rain outside my window.
What sound or noise do you hate? The voice of a telemarketer on the phone.
What is your favorite curse word? Fuck, and all its delightful permutations.
What occupation other than your own would you like to attempt? Documentary filmmaker.
What occupation would you not want to participate in? Car salesman, or any type of salesman for that matter.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? All that you love is here, all that you hate is behind you.
